The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) today joined the global community in commemorating the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), an annual campaign aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and promoting responsible use of antimicrobials across human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere I. Akujobi, who represented the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening antimicrobial stewardship, improving surveillance systems, and promoting best practices within the livestock sector.
The event witnessed the presence of major national and international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv), Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), and the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), among others.
The Ministry reiterated that collective action is essential to safeguard public health, ensure food safety, and protect future generations from the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
