Governments at all levels have been urged to establish recreational centres for elderly persons across the country in recognition of their immense contributions to national development during their productive years.
The Head of the Geriatric Department at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, Dr. Dauda Haruna Muhammad, made the call during the commemoration of World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day organised by the Department of Family Medicine of the hospital.
Dr. Muhammad expressed concern over the growing incidence of elder abuse in Nigeria, describing it as a serious social problem that often goes unrecognized and unreported to relevant authorities.
He stressed that elderly people deserve respect, care, and appreciation for their contributions to society during their youth and adulthood, noting that ageing is a stage of life everyone hopes to attain.
According to him, factors contributing to elder abuse include caregiver stress, dependency, physical or mental impairment of older persons, and other socio-economic challenges.
He identified family members, adult children, friends, and neighbours as some of the common perpetrators of elder abuse.
The geriatric specialist further explained that elder abuse can have severe consequences, including physical injuries, psychological trauma, emotional distress, and even death.
Dr. Muhammad called on all stakeholders to join efforts in promoting the welfare of elderly persons through love, respect, and proper care.
He also encouraged family members to support older relatives by ensuring they adhere to prescribed medications and maintain healthy lifestyles.
The event highlighted the need for increased awareness, stronger protection mechanisms, and improved support systems for elderly citizens in Nigeria.
